Cool Tool: DNA Concentric Circles Type: Assessment Topic: The Difference Between a Gene, a Chromosome, and a Genome Grade Level: Middle school, high school Contributor: Megan Brown School: University of Washington, Seattle, WA Purpose: To assess whether students have understood the difference between genes, chromosomes, and the genome. Materials: None Methods: Challenge students to demonstrate their understanding of the difference between genes, chromosomes, and the genome with this simple assessment. Draw a picture of 3 concentric circles on the blackboard. Ask students to draw the picture in their notebooks and label each circle with one of the 3 terms (gene, chromosome, or genome). Students should recognize that the largest circle represents the genome, the intermediate circle the chromosome, and the smallest the gene. Classroom Use: DNA Beads are used in courtrooms to educate jurors but can also be used with success in the high school classroom. Use the beads in an introduction or review. DNA Beads also work well when used in conjunction with other models. Reference: Adapted from DNA--From Genes to Proteins, Teacher's Guide. Betty B. Hoskins, 1997, Delta Education, Inc., p. 73. |
